Additional Basic Qualification Courses

Primary

Course Description

This course will enable teachers to receive additional basic qualifications for the primary division. A variety of instructional strategies and the organization of teaching learning experiences for the primary division will be included in this course.

Admission Requirements

1. General Certificate of Qualification and Registration in Good Standing (Verification of OCT registration will be done online via the Public Register of the Ontario College of Teachers).
2. An acceptable postsecondary degree or qualifications that the Registrar considers to be equivalent to such a degree.

Teachers holding Qualifications in Technological Education may take the three-part specialist courses in Special Education.

B.Ed. students graduating in 2014 from an Ontario Faculty of Education may take courses prior to membership with OCT providing that they have met all the requirements to graduate and have registered with OCT. Students from Faculties other than Western must provide proof of successful completion of their B.Ed. program. Students from Faculties outside of Ontario MUST be a member of the Ontario College of Teachers prior to the course start date.

Junior

Course Description

This course will enable teachers to receive additional basic qualifications for the junior division. A variety of instructional strategies and the organization of teaching learning experiences for the junior division will be included in this course.

Intermediate

Course Description

Using an integrated approach to curriculum, this course will enable teachers to receive additional qualifications for the intermediate division in one subject area (general studies). Topics such as curriculum planning, teaching strategies and assessment of learning experiences for the intermediate division will be included in this course.

Admission Requirements

1. General Certificate of Qualification and Registration in Good Standing (Verification of OCT registration will be done online via the Public Register of the Ontario College of Teachers).

2. An acceptable postsecondary degree or qualifications that the Registrar considers to be equivalent to such a degree.

3. Two full-year university courses to support the subject for which qualification is sought. (An official transcript(s) is required. Fax a copy to us upon registration AND follow up with an official transcript sent directly from the issuing institution. Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.)

Senior

Course Description

This course will enable teachers to receive additional basic qualifications for the senior division. This course will include curriculum planning, teaching strategies, and assessment of learning experiences for the senior division.

Admission Requirements

1. General Certificate of Qualification and Registration in Good Standing (Verification of OCT registration will be done online via the Public Register of the Ontario College of Teachers).

2. An acceptable postsecondary degree or qualifications that the Registrar considers to be equivalent to such a degree.

3. For applicants who do not already hold a "Senior" qualification, a "B" average (70%) in a minimum of five full year university courses to support the teaching subject are required OR for applicants whose CQR does indicate "Senior" as an area of concentration, a minimum of two full year university courses to support the teaching subject are required. (An official transcript(s) is required. Fax a copy to us upon registration AND follow up with an official transcript sent directly from the issuing institution.Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.)

Technological Education

Course Description

This course is designed for teachers of technological education who wish to obtain an additional basic qualification. Development of teaching skills relative to theoretical, practical, and curriculum concepts will be included in this course.

Admission Requirements

1. Certificate of Qualification and Registration in Good Standing (Verification of OCT registration will be done online via the Public Register of the Ontario College of Teachers)

2. A candidate must have an entry for a technological education subject (see "A")
For applicants whose CQR does NOT indicate initial qualifications in Technological Education (see "B")

A. For applicants who hold TECHNOLOGICAL EDUCATION qualifications on their CQR.
A candidate must successfully demonstrate his or her competence based on an assessment of advanced knowledge and skill in the area of technology.

B. For applicants whose CQR does NOT indicate initial qualifications in Technological Education one of the following must be submitted to and approved by Continuing Teacher Education:

a) five years of wage-earning experience, including business or industrial experience, or a combination of postsecondary education and work experience that totals five years and includes:
i) at least two years of work experience, including business or industrial experience, at least 4 months of which were continuous, and
ii) post-secondary education acceptable to the College consisting of:
--a program leading to an acceptable postsecondary degree, or a certificate, diploma or advanced diploma granted under the Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology Act, 2002, or a predecessor act, or under the Private Colleges Act, 2005, or a predecessor act, or by another institution acceptable to the College, or
--an apprenticeship program acceptable to the College, and

b. in the work experience referred to above, demonstrated competency based on an assessment of advanced skills and knowledge related to the technological education subject.

NOTE: For the purposes of fulfilling the work experience requirements outlined in (a) and (b) above, up to one year of work experience completed as part of a work placement or co-operative work placement in a postsecondary education program may be counted if the placement was a required element of the education program and the work experience occurred after the applicant had completed at least 50 per cent of the program.

NOTE: General Studies teachers who do not have a qualification in Technological Education on their Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) will be required to submit their original documentation verifying 5 years of wage-earning experience, or education plus experience as outlined in the admission requirements PRIOR to registering for a Technological Education course. They also MAY be required to submit original documentation to the Ontario College of Teachers for evaluation before the qualification is added to their CQR.

NOTE: If you are already a certified Technological Education teacher, you will be required to submit evidence of demonstrated knowledge & skill in the area of Technology to the Continuing Teacher Education Office prior to taking this course as outlined in A above.

B.Ed. students graduating in 2014 from an Ontario Faculty of Education may take courses prior to membership with OCT providing that they have met all the requirements to graduate prior to the course start date and have registered with OCT and paid their dues. Students from Faculties other than Western must provide proof of successful completion of their B.Ed. program.
