The Reading courses are literacy courses and useful for teachers at all grade levels. The courses explore the patterns of language development and current approaches to literary instruction.

Course Description
This introductory course will include patterns of language development; reading and writing processes; current approaches to literary instruction; literature in the curriculum; assessment of individual language development; and evaluation of elementary and secondary language curricula.

Admission Requirements
- General Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) in Good Standing.
- A qualification in one of the following: Primary division; Junior division; Intermediate division in a general education subject from Schedule A; or Senior division in a general education subject from Schedule A.
(Our office will verify your OCT status and CQR via the online OCT Public Register. You do not need to send a copy.)
*Teachers holding Qualifications in Technological Education may enroll in the three-part AQ courses in Reading.
NOTE:
- If you hold a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration, you cannot enroll in an Additional Qualifications course.
- Teachers trained outside of Ontario, and wishing to teach in Ontario, must be a fully registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers PRIOR to registration in an AQ.
- Exceptions to the above are made for trained teachers from other jurisdictions who do not plan to teach in Ontario. Contact aspire@uwo.ca for more information.

Payment of the tuition amount, by cheque or credit card, must be received in full to complete registration and secure a space in the course. Spaces are not held pending receipt of payment. It is recommended that you provide your credit card number to ensure timely payment. * VISA debit cards are not accepted. Payment may be made by Visa or Mastercard.
The tuition amount includes a $100 non-refundable processing fee. This fee is applied to refunds issued for course withdrawals, including those for medical reasons and non-eligibility.
Registration acceptance is dependent upon payment of fees and fulfillment of eligibility requirements.
*It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria before completing the registration/payment process. Check admission requirements for your course.
*International Students: International Fees apply for any student who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Please contact aspire@uwo.ca prior to registration.
A receipt can be printed on-screen at the time of payment, or a Statement of Account and Web Academic Report can be printed later from the Office of the Registrar website. Go to our FAQ page for printing instructions.

Reading Part 2
Course Description
This course will provide advanced study of reading including theoretical models of language development and their implications for elementary and secondary school instruction; critical analysis of formal and informal strategies for evaluating literacy development; teaching strategies to meet individual needs; and historical overview and current trends in literature for young readers.

Admission Requirements
- General Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) indicating successful completion of Reading Part 1.
(CQR copy is not required as our office will verify Part 1 completion via the online OCT Public Register.) - Evidence of at least one year (194 days) of successful teaching experience, as certified by an appropriate supervisory officer. The supervisory officer is the superintendent of the school board (not the principal) or in the case of private schools, the Ministry of Education official assigned to provide supervisory services. Teaching experience must be completed AFTER initial teacher certification and PRIOR to the first day of the course.

- The above documentation must be received by the ASPIRE office prior to the start date of the AQ course. Failure to submit required documentation may result in your removal from the course.

Admission Requirements
- General Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) indicating successful completion of Reading Part 2.
(CQR copy is not required as our office will verify Part 2 completion via the online OCT Public Register.) - Evidence of at least two years (388 days) of successful teaching experience, of which at least one year (194 days) is in the subject area, as certified by an appropriate supervisory officer. The supervisory officer is the superintendent of the school board (not the principal) or in the case of private schools, the Ministry of Education official assigned to provide supervisory services. Teaching experience must be completed AFTER initial teacher certification and PRIOR to the first day of the course.
NOTE: Where a teacher is teaching the subject in an integrated format, supervisory officers may consider experience where a teacher can demonstrate that he or she has planned and implemented instruction, and evaluated students using approved curriculum policy documents related to the subject (OCT Memorandum: August 30, 2012).
